The Wonder & Thunder
of Kangaroos
Down Under
Have you wanted to meet a flyer, a boomer or a joey? Well, look no further than Australia. The land ‘Down Under’ is host to over 40 different species of kangaroos. These animals have become synonymous with Australia and are featured on the Australian coat of arms (along with the Emu).
However, few images are more endearing than a joey (a baby kangaroo) poking it’s head from the pouch of a flyer (a female kangaroo). These charismatic creatures can be visited in the many parks across Australia, but if you’re really looking for a thrill go to Adelaide and cross the straight to Kangaroo Island.
Kangaroo Island is one of the last unspoilt wildlife habitats remaining on Earth. The Island, seven times the size of Singapore, has a thriving eco-system bursting with exotic and interesting wildlife. You’ll see more than just kangaroos here (although the Kangaroo Island, Kangaroo, is specific to the Island). You might spot a Tammar Wallaby, Australian Sea Lions, New Zealand Fur Seals, Koalas, Brushtail Possums, Black Tiger Snakes, as well as; lizards, bats and frogs. Just as spectacular as the wildlife is the beauty of the island itself; saturated with colorful wildflowers and an abundance of flora and fauna that is lively humming with birds.
Other recommendations for an Adventure Woman are caving at Kelly Caves, kayaking, sand boarding or taking an all-terrain vehicle through 500 acres of bushland trails. Other options worth exploring are the Kangaroo Island Marine Center, the Parndara Wildlife Park and the Penneshaw Penguin Center.
You can book a one day round-trip ferry from Adelaide or stay on the Island (Adventure Woman’s recommendation). There is an accommodation choice suitable for everyone; including, luxury lodging, bed & breakfasts, hotels, hostels and camping. For more information, check out: www.tourkangarooisland.com.au. And if you haven’t guessed by now, ‘a boomer’ is a male kangaroo… Have fun and send us a photo of your Australian Kangaroo Adventure. Until next time!
