“Dog mushing is wonderful sport. Mainly because the dogs are such wonderful creatures. We owe it to the dogs to treat them as well as possible.”

Libby Riddles (1957-)
Three is a charm for Riddles, who became the first woman to win the grueling Iditarod dog-sled race in 1985. The race follows an old Alaskan turn-of-the-century cargo route and crosses 1,100 miles of the most forbidding terrain on the planet. Facing temperatures up to -50 degrees and one hundred mile an hour winds, Riddles crossed the finish line with her thirteen dog team in just over seventeen days (several hours before the second place finisher). She won “Sportswoman of the Year,” for 1985, by the Women’s Sports Foundation. Riddles is an author of three books and a speaker.
