Kay Cottee (1954- )
Australian Kay Cottee, made sailing history on June 5, 1988, becoming the first woman to sail nonstop single-handed around the world (also setting seven world records). She began her brave voyage on November 29, 1987, to emotional well-wishers cheering her on. Over the next several months there would be more tears, home sickness and difficult challenges, but none too daunting for the steely and determined Cottee. At different points in the journey she was hurled across the cabin and washed overboard to the length of her harness, but she was confident and smiling when she crossed the finish line in Sydney on her historic boat, Blackmores First Lady. She was named the 1988 Australian of the Year.
