“She died on the forefront of fighting illegal poachers…" Police Report”

Joan Root 1936 - 2006
Joan Root was a courageous animal activist, conservationist and Oscar-nominated film maker. She was born in Kenya to British parents. Before animal movies were in vogue she, and her husband, filmed groundbreaking documentaries of wildlife. She also kept meticulous records of the seasons of plants and animal species. Unable to have children of her own, she mothered the wildlife in need of care. After her divorce, she committed herself to protecting the local ecosystem, as well. Despite numerous death threats she was determined to stay an advocate for nature. Although she installed steel doors on her bedroom, and took other precautions, she was murdered at her home. She left her land as an admission-free wildlife preserve.
