The Hotel Marshyanghi
Your trip to Mt. Everest Basecamp (if you're approaching from Nepal) will most likely start in Kathmandu. From there you will be flown to Lukla to begin the actual trek. However, you'll want to stay in lively city of Kathmandu for a few days to acclimate to the new elevation and to enjoy the shopping and excitement of this historic town.
One of the nicest places you can stay in Kathmandu is Hotel Marshyanghi. The hotel is upscale by Nepalese standards and is conveniently centrally located. You can easily walk to hundreds of shops and restaurants and instantly immerse yourself into the colorful Nepalese culture. The hotel, itself, has a lovely courtyard restaurant that serves Nepalese, Indian, and western cuisine. You can order anything from a new spicy foreign dish to a comforting American banana split. The restaurant also offers a plentiful morning breakfast buffet with mad- to-order omelets, sausages, oatmeal, yogurt, fresh fruits and good coffee.
The bedrooms are nicely appointed and have private restrooms. However, Kathmandu is very noisy at night so you might want to bring a pair of earplugs with you. Electricity is at a premium in Nepal so the electric will go on and off during the day and night. This means the elevators may stop working for several hours and you'll be forced to take the stairs (probably excellent exercise for your trek, however).
For a small fee, the hotel will store your luggage and valuables while you travel. The hotel has small securely locked boxes where you can keep important items while you're trekking. This may be a good alternative to taking plane tickets and other travel documents with you on your trip up the mountain. The hotel also has computers for internet usage for guests (for a small fee). However, like the electricity the service comes and goes and can be unpredictable.
Before and after your trek the Hotel Marshyanghi will seem like a luxurious paradise. Indeed, it has been recognized as one of the best deluxe hotels in Kathmandu. So enjoy the warm baths, the comfortable beds, and real toilets before you embark on your rugged journey to one of the highest and most remote spots on the planet. Overall, Hotel Marshyanghi has modern conveniences, delicious food, and warm hospitality in a central (and safe) location. It’s a winning combination.
